ATTAPEU – The gateway to the Annamites
Attapeu Province is one of the southern most provinces in Laos and formally coined the term “land of Heroism” after the province became the headquarters to the National Liberation Front during the revolutionary war against the French regime. There are still plentiful remnants of war visible in the region today as the Ho Chi Minh Trail passed through the province.
The area’s terrain is rugged with beautiful scenic landscapes from thick forests, river valleys and plains with a stunning backdrop of ever present mountains. There are several waterfalls that are note worthy of a visit. With some large protected areas including extensive wetland areas the province is ideal for birding and sees relatively few tourists due to limited accessibility. The main towns are Attapeu, Xaysetha and Sanamxai.
